Fall Flavors at your Local Farmers Market

As the seasons change, be on the lookout for fall flavors at your local farmers market.

Let’s take a peek at the fall flavors to be on the lookout for this season.

Apples

Apples are a favorite and somewhat obvious selection for Fall.  And a great item to grab from your local farmers market. More than just tasting good, farmers market apples have unique benefits. You can learn when and where they were grown and better yet, they don’t have the wax coating or preservatives of typical grocery store apples.

Eggplant

This large, purple vegetable comes into season at the end of summer and stays ripe well into fall. Look for the heavy, shiny ones to grill or bake to perfection.

Greens

A variety of greens become available throughout the fall months at the farmers markets. Greens such as arugula, lettuce, mizuna, and bok choy show up earlier in the season followed by superfood greens like rainbow chard, Swiss chard, kale, collards, and mustard greens later on in the season.

Pumpkin

Pumpkin flavored foods are one of the best parts of fall.  Pumpkins come into season in September in most areas, just in time for Halloween. Find the perfect pumpkin to decorate or use the small sugar pumpkin variety to make pumpkin pie. Don’t forget to save the seeds to roast after you use the pumpkin!

Squash

There are many different types of squash that come into season in the fall. No matter what type of squash you choose, always pick one that feels heavy for its size. Awesome squash dishes for fall include butternut squash soup and spaghetti squash.

Sweet potatoes

Sweet potatoes are a very versatile vegetable that can be cooked in a variety of ways. Bake them into sweet potato fries or mash them into a sweet potato casserole for a fun Thanksgiving side dish.
