- 2 pounds turnips, thinly sliced
- 1/2 yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 3/4 cup milk
- 1/3 cup heavy cream
- Salt and pepper
Preheat oven to 350. Butter the bottom and sides of a casserole dish and set aside. Saute the onions in 1 tablespoon of butter in a large pan until they just begin to soften. Remove from heat.
In the casserole dish, layer 1/3 of the turnips, top with 1/3 of the onions, then top with a sprinkle of the flour and salt and pepper, then finally with 1 tablespoon of butter, cut into small cubes.
Repeat with two additional layers. Mix together the milk and cream and then pour over top.
Cover and bake for 30 minutes, then uncover and bake for an additional 30-40 minutes until tender and bubbly.
